Taiwan's Yang Ming Line is scrapping 20 of its older container ships in the 3,000-TEU to 8,000-TEU range and will replace them with newer vessels following a decision by the state-backed Taiwan International Port Corporation to convert $343 million in debt owed by Yang Ming into investment funds.

Late last year the Taiwanese carrier launched a new China-Vietnam Express service in partnership with regional carriers MCC Transport and TS Lines using four 1,000-TEU ships but indicated it might delay delivery of a new series of 14,000-TEU vessels until next year.
