World's Largest Container Ship

Holding a title it will not keep for long, China Shipping Container Lines' 19,100-TEU CSCL Globe has departed on its maiden voyage. Photo courtesy of CSCL.

The first of a series of five 19,100-TEU container ships ordered by China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL), the CSCL Globe, has set off on its maiden voyage from China's Tianjin Port to Hamburg, Germany via Suez following its completion by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI). The newbuilding and its four sisters measure 400-meters by 58.6-meters and are powered by 77,200-bhp electronically-controlled main engines that will burn 20 percent less fuel per TEU than a similar configured 10,000-TEU container vessel.

CSCL, one of the world's fast-growing container shipping lines, currently operates over 80 shipping routes and, as of the middle of 2014, controlled 148 vessels capable of carrying a total of 656,000 TEUs.
