Great Land for Scrap

Capable of carrying up to 386 trailers and 126 vehicles on the 1,500-mile run between Tacoma and Anchorage, the 38-year-old trailership Great Land has gone for scrap.

Totem Ocean Trailer Express’ 1975-built trailership Great Land left the coast in March under tow of Weeks Marine’s similar-vintage tug Alexandria to the scrapyards of Brownsville, Texas and demolition. The vessel made its initial call at the Port of Tacoma in 1976, which marked a major shift in the Alaska trade from port of seattle. Sister ship Westward Venture was scrapped in Texas last year while another sister, Northern Lights, continues to operate as El Faro in the Puerto Rico trade.
