NYC Ferry has begun its passenger-only operations in New York Harbor with the first of what will eventually be twenty, 26-meter catamarans capable of accommodating 119 passengers each. Designed by Australia's Incat Crowther, and built by Horizon Shipyard in Bayou La Batre, Alabama and Metal Shark in Franklin, Louisiana, the boats are powered by twin Baudouin 6M26.3 engines rated at 599kw each and giving a top speed in excess of 27 knots.

All of the craft have been named by second graders at schools located near the ferry system's 22 landings, and Lunch Box will soon be joined by such sisters as McShiney, Happy Hauler, Owl's Head, Great Eagle, and Waves of Wonder.
